Anna Cave

The Anna Cave is a tufa rock limestone cave which is one of the most unique caves in all of Hungary. It is unique not only when compared to other caves in Hungary but in the rest of the world as well. There are only six caves like this one in the world as travertine caves (tufa rock limestone) are not typically open to the public.

You can encounter beautiful shapes formed in the travertine passages. Beyond the hanging stalactites, limestone formations like fine curtains can be seen.  Fossilized plant remains, roots, trees, moss and bark, and their imprints are curiosities.

The cave is open to visitors all year round and offers guided tours. The cave is 570 meters in total length out of which 208 meters can be toured.

The entrance to the cave is 272 meters above sea level on the lowest level of the Lillafured Hanging Gardens right next to the waterfalls. It was discovered in 1833 with the help of miner Andras Stark and soon became a popular tourist attraction. The famous Hungarian poet, Sandor Petofi also visited the cave in 1847. Due to the closure of the iron heaps, the cave was forgotten for a while until its reopening in 1912 while new cavities were found in 1927.
