St. Stephen’s Cave
St. Stephen's Cave in Lillafüred is a specially protected stalactite cave located about 500 meters (547 yards) from the Palace Hotel’s entrance, next to the Eger Highway.
It is more than 1 km in length (0.62 mile). The vertical extent of the cave is 94 m (308 feet). Currently, the total length of the tour that is open to visitors is 340 meters (372 yards). Guided tours are available all year round.
Visiting the cave is virtually like landing in a fairy tale, with its fabulous stalactite formations making it an unforgettable experience. In the cave, stalactites bear fantasy names given by visitors. Its largest stalactite formation is the ”Frozen Waterfall” of the Dome Hall.
The cave is home to harmless and protected bats which can be seen by visitors during the tour.
The cave was discovered by accident. Legend has it that a dog fell into a hole on the steep hillside and kept barking for days, calling attention to itself. The exploration of the cave began afterwards. The cave’s discovery and first scientific description was officially published by Ottokár Kadic dating back to 1913.
The so-called Black Hall of the cave is used for therapeutic purposes. The room offers treatments for adults and children with upper respiratory tract complaints with its ideal and constant temperature of 10 ° C (50 degrees Fahrenheit) and 100% humidity.
