Trout Nature Trail

The Trout Nature Trail, which is named after the Lillafured Trout Farm, starts off at the Garadna Valley Forest Railroad stop. Living up to its name, it passes through the trout farm and its fish fry restaurant. On the way back, the path also stops at the Tourist Memorial Park on the left side of the valley. The trail has nine checkpoints in total.

Trout farming and fishing has long been a tradition in the Szinva Valley. The fish eggs were bred from different colonies from the Szinva stream, and were kept in the valley’s limestone cellars until the fish were introduced into the streams and Lake Hamor.

Otto Herman (Hungarian scientist, ethnographer, archeologist and politician) had proposed the construction of a trout farm in the Szinva Creek’s valley back in 1906; however, it was not until two decades later when it was realized. In 1932, most of the trout in Lake Hamor died off, necessitating the establishment of a trout farm in the Garadna Valley.
