Rooster Church

The reformed church of Miskolc downtown is simply nicknamed the Rooster Church after the golden rooster on top of the church tower.

It is located in one of the coziest streets, the Kossuth Lajos Street. It is currently the largest Reformed Church in the region. It was built in neoclassical style between 1786 and 1808.

Its majestic, single-nave interior is whitewashed and modestly designed. The ceiling design is Czech quadripartite rib vaults. By the entrance is the three-story gallery with three archway openings on each level. In similar fashion, brick galleries were built both on the north and west sides. The benches and the golden-plated, handcarved wicker pulpit are original to the building, as well as the organ.

A notable feature is the 28-meter magnificent Eszter Bell, which is located in the 68-meter high tower of the church. It commemorates Eszter Bató, a wealthy merchant girl who died tragically in the 19th century.
