Fazola Smelter/Blast Furnace
The only metallurgical monument in the country, the charcoal blast furnace used for smelting, also known as Fazola Furnace or Ancient Furnace, is located in the picturesque valley of the Garadna River. It is only one of three such industrial monuments in Europe.
The history of the blast furnace dates back to the 18th century. In 1770, Henrik Fazola built an ironworks in the area, taking advantage of the mines he discovered, the vast forests and the nearby creek.
In 1813 his son followed suit. He built a dam to create Lake Hamor and then built a more modern smelter, an ironworks. The blast furnace was rebuilt in 1831 and closed in 1872.
It remained in ruins for decades and then collapsed. It was reconstructed in the middle of the 20th century and restored to its original form.
Next to the blast furnace is the Massa Museum and the Ironmonger's Monument, which helps familiarize you with the ironworks of the time.
The Fazola furnace can be reached from Miskolc by the Lillafüred Railway. By bus, take bus number 15 from Miskolc Felső-Majláth. The Fazola furnace offers free admission.
