Misi Nyilas House

The Memorial Room of Eszter Bató is located in the Misi Nyilas House. The story of Eszter (Esther) Bató is well known to most city dwellers. The merchant Imre Bató’s first born daughter, Eszter Bató, married János Piskóti, a lawyer, in 1855. However, the husband soon fell ill. Eszter faithfully nurtured him until his death, then moved back to her parents' house. But soon grief and illness took her to the grave as well. She died in May 1865 at the age of 27. Her grief stricken parents started some rituals for their beloved daughter. The Bell of the Rooster Church honors Esther three times each year.

In his will, Eszter’s father ordered her room to be left undisturbed, only to be opened once every year. However, the Bató House got in the way of city planning; in the 1970s, it was demolished after nearly a hundred years.

One of the rooms in the Misi Nyilas House has been dedicated to Eszter’s memory since May 13, 2002. Here you can see the furniture, pictures and objects that were preserved in their original state. A painting also commemorates Eszter Bató.

The memorial room is open to the public and can be visited by appointment, free of charge.
