Palace Hotel

The Lillafüred Palace Hotel is a picturesque Neo-Renaissance hotel located in the vicinity of Lake Hámor, built at the intersection of three valleys.

It was built between 1925 and 1929 as a state investment designed by Kálmán Lux and was opened in 1930.

The place was already a popular hiking destination and holiday resort, but after the Palace Hotel and hanging gardens were built, it became a popular vacation spot for the contemporary elite. There were congresses, conferences and even a film festival. Attila József's poem entitled The Ode is linked to the Palace Hotel and the surrounding landscape. The highly successful movie title "The Dream Car", presented in 1934, was also shot here.

During the Second World War, German, then later Russian soldiers lived there. From the 1950s, it became a SZOT resort (SZOT: National Council of Trade Unions). Since 1993, it has been under the ownership of the Hunguest Hotels chain.

The Palace Hotel has been a national treasure of the Hungarian Depository since 2015.

There are two panel paintings in the lobby; one is the work of Ferenc Helbing made in 1830, depicting King Louis the Great, receiving a Venetian peace mission in Diósgyőr. The other is about the triumph of Nándorfehérvár, the work of Béla Sándor. The beautiful stained glass windows of the hotel’s King Matthias Restaurant commemorate the former Hungarian cities (Bratislava, Braşov, Kosice, Levoča, Bardejov, Kežmarok, Cluj-Napoca, Orava, Vajdahunyad).

The revival of the Hanging Gardens in 2013 around the hotel is also contributing to the appearance and design of the Palace Hotel.

The Hanging Garden section of the Palace Hotel is open to the public free of charge. The front desk is open and guests can wait in the lobby. King Matthias’ Restaurant is open to diners.
