City Hall Square

City Hall Square is the historical center of Miskolc with both City Hall and County Hall located here. On the east, the square is bordered by Miskolc’s main street, the Széchenyi Street. The main street is a pedestrian zone where all automobile traffic is either prohibited or has limited access. Hunyadi Street is to the west, Szent István Square to the south, and Kis-Hunyad and Palóczy Streets are to the north of the square.

There is mention of the City Hall as far back as the mid 1600s. The present-day romantic style building was built around 1870. The first building of the County Hall was erected around 1725 and 1727. The present neoclassical building has been standing in its present location since 1968.

The most recognizable feature of the square is the statue of Count István Széchenyi, ”the Greatest Hungarian,” the work of Miklós Melocco in 1993, which dominates the space with its tall, robust presence.
