Elizabeth Square

Elizabeth Square is probably one of the most beautiful squares in Miskolc. It radiates peace and quiet, where you can take a rest during or after a long walk.

In the summer, closer to the tram line, flush mounted water jets provide a magical fountain experience without a pool. Looking over it in the background stands the distinctive tarnished bronze statue of Lajos Kossuth.

On one side of the square is the Elizabeth Bath, known for its glass dome; currently operating as a health center and spa.

The headquarters of the Miskolc Academic Committee, the Pataky-Argay House and the Diószeghy House give the rest of the framework to the square.

From the square you can see the Romanesque and Gothic monumental Avas Reformed Church and Bell Tower at the foot of the Avas hillside, with its distinctive roof made of oak wood.

The square is closed off by a short stone bridge called the Elizabeth Bridge crossing the Szinva River.

An interesting fact about the square is that there used to be a mill called the Priest Mill before it was demolished to give room for the building of the Elizabeth Bath. At that time the square was called Pastor Mill Square (Papmalom Square).

The statue of Lajos Kossuth is the work of József Róna which, at the time, was the first full-figure statue of Kossuth in the country and has been adorning the center of the square since 1989.
