Heroes’ Square
Located downtown in Miskolc between Déryné and Kazinczy Street, Heroes' Square is surrounded by Baroque and Classicist buildings. It is known for the Fallen Heroes’ Memorial.
The dominant building complex of the square is the temple and former monastery that belonged to the Order of the Friars Minor or „Minorites,” a Franciscan group. The order was founded within the Catholic Church originally in 1209 by Saint Francis of Assisi.
Next to the Minorite Parish is the Ferenc Földes High School. The school’s history goes as far back as 450 years through its predecessors.
To the east of the high school is the Post Office Palace designed by Gusztáv Reischl. The facade is the work of Gyula Walder, an art professor.
On the Western edge of the square is Gergely Berzeviczy Bilingual Secondary School of Trade and Catering, one of the oldest secondary trade schools in the country.
The characteristic monument of the square is the pyramid-based group of sculptures created by the sculptor Péter Szanyi.
Since the millennium renovation, the area has been surrounded by beautiful landscaping, including trees planted by representatives from sister cities. Due to the square’s fountain system, it is a very popular summer destination.
