Ruins of the Benedictine Abbey - Miskolctapolca
Next to the Miskolctapolca Cave Bath along the István Pazár Promenade lie the ruins of the 900-year-old Benedictine Abbey, which was discovered by archaeologists of the Herman Otto Museum in 2012.
The abbey was once founded by the Miskóc tribe near the hot springs. The excavated walls today stand at 1.2 to 1.5 meters (4-5 feet) tall, but for centuries these walls were buried 1.5 to 2 meters (5-6.5 feet) deep underground.
There are very few written records found about the early history of the Benedictine Abbey in Tapolca. The exact year of foundation is not known.
The Benedictine Church was built on an island where in the 11th century, stood a rotunda; a round church building. The rotunda may have been the parish church of the settlement, likely the earliest building in medieval Miskolc.
The Benedictine Church was destroyed around 1532. Previously, it became inhabitable due to environmental changes. Its building stones were carried away by the surrounding population, leaving only one tower which served as a wine cellar in the 18th century. The Anna Hotel was built in its place in 1924.
It is worth it to plan your trip to include the Cave Bath and the Abbey ruins, then take a stroll around the park in Miskolctapolca. The Abbey ruins are located in an open air area. It is open to the public free of charge.
