Csupros Mária Statue
The statue standing on the square in front of the Mindszenti Church is nicknamed Csupros Mária (”Mary with the Jug”). Mária stands tall on a globe at the top of a Corinthian column with a star halo around her head.
There are several legends as to why the statue was named Csupros Mária. Traditionally, she was nicknamed by the former market’s proximity. According to another hypothesis, the women selling milk on the market used to put the jugs filled with milk on the pedestal's base, and also would hang them on the fence and the statue itself.
According to a fairy tale, a poor mother left out an empty jug overnight, which always filled with fresh milk by the morning for her children to drink. This miracle was contributed to the statue.
The statue was erected in 1738 at the request of the citizens of Mindszent and Miskolc. At the time Mindszent was still an independent village near Miskolc. The purpose of the statue was to express gratitude to the Virgin Mary because the Virgin had protected the townspeople from the plague. The sculptor is unknown, but it is suspected that it is the same artist as the creator of Diósgyőr's Immaculata. The original statue was damaged during the great flood of 1878, and restoration was completed in 1898.
Over the decades, the location of the statue has also changed. After the most restoration in 2001, the statue was placed back to its original location at the intersection by the church. The original statue of Mary was relocated to the courtyard of the Mindszent Church to be protected from the adverse effects of traffic pollution.
