Kossuth Statue
One of Miskolc's most prominent public statues stands on Elizabeth Square in honor of Lajos Kossuth. It was unveiled in 1898.
Lajos Kossuth visited Miskolc only twice. In 1879, he lost his Hungarian citizenship. In response, several cities gave him honorary citizenship. In 1898, on the 50th anniversary of the March 15, 1848 revolution, at the General Assembly, they decided to dedicate a statue in his honor by public donation. The artwork was created by József Róna. The statue was unveiled on Pentecost Monday at an official inauguration ceremony attended by József Lévay, Otto Herman, and Bertalan Szemere’s son.
The statue is made of bronze and covered with patina. It stands on a four-meter high carved stone pedestal designed by István Kiss.
