St. Stephen’s Statue

King Stephen’s statue is just across from City Hall on St. Stephen’s Square, near the Flower Clock by the foot of the Avas Hill. It is the work of Zsolt Jószay.

The statue depicts the founding king, Saint Stephen, immediately after coronation, crossing the symbolic gate of Christianity with the crown jewels; the orb in his left hand, the scepter in his right, with the mantle on his shoulder wearing the Holy Crown of Hungary presented by Pope Sylvester II.

Two lions guard the king on either side of the gate, inspired by a mural of the Royal Castle of Esztergom. Above the king's head is the monogram of St. Stephen, known from the founding letter of the Abbey of Pannonhalma.
