Széchenyi Statue

The robust statue of István Széchenyi, inaugurated on October 23, 1994, rises at the striking point of Town Hall Square. This monumental work is credited to Miklós Melocco. The creation of the statue was supported by a public donation campaign which was launched in 1988.

Széchenyi visited Miskolc three times. He was a great supporter of the cultural life of the city, and made a significant financial contribution to the construction and maintenance of the theater. The main street downtown has been named after him ever since 1861.

The statue depicts the old István Széchenyi. The work is made of Süttő stone (Süttő - a village in Hungary), and bears the signature of Széchenyi István on its side.
