The Lympian Cross

One of the stops along the Maria Promenade is the cross or crucifix of Limpias; a religious shrine built in the late 1920s, originally stood at the end of the walkway.

It was named after the cross in the center of the shrine which is the exact replica of the famous temple cross in the village of Limpias in Spain. Wonderful healing properties have been attributed to the original cross. The original counterpart in Spain was the work of Pedro de Mena, an Andalusian sculptor.

In the 1930s, Sunday masses and concerts were held here from spring to fall.

The cross was damaged during a storm in 2014 and had to be rebuilt. The metal body of Christ was restored by 2015.
