CINEFEST INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL - MISKOLC
Miskolc has had a longstanding relationship with the film culture; the first Hungarian film festival was already held here in 1939 in Lillafured at the Palace Hotel.
Oscar-winning screenwriter and director, Imre Pressburger, was born in Miskolc in 1902. His birthplace is at St. Peter’s Gate 3 (Miskolc, Szentpeteri kapu 3.). From the 1960s, the Miskolc Short Film and Television Festival was one of the most significant film related events in Hungary for three decades. Born in Borsod County, in the village of Ricse, Adolf Zukor was also a Hungarian-born Oscar-winning filmmaker, co-founder of Paramount Pictures and one of the founders of the Hollywood film industry. Another famous Hollywood filmmaker who was born in Borsod County, Tolcsva, was also of Hungarian descent; William Fox, the founder of 20th Century Fox.
The CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival was first held in 2004 and since then, it has become Hungary’s most prominent film festival. The festival’s competition films feature current artists from around the world. The theme of the festival is young artists, but it also offers a number of historical and retrospective programs.
The event, traditionally held in the second week of September, will feature more than 120 films. All feature films are premiered in Hungary. This is the only festival in Hungary where international juries, such as FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics), CICAE (International Association of Art Cinemas) and the Ecumenical Jury, operate in addition to the international jury awarding the grand prizes. The audience will also have a chance to vote for their favorite film in the Audience Award category. The festival offers many master classes and workshops for the future film generation. The festival also collaborates with the University of Miskolc in several areas (e.g., the thematic short films under the title "Our Home in Miskolc" is traditionally created by the university’s students).
Over more than a decade, CineFest has hosted thousands of foreign and Hungarian film professionals, among them many famous and respected industry leaders. The festival's Lifetime Awards were awarded to Miklós Jancsó, Vilmos Zsigmond, Claudia Cardinale and Károly Makk, among others. In 2016, French actress Juliette Binoche was awarded the European Cinema Ambassador award, the festival’s newest award. Additionally, every year the festival welcomes prominent members of the movie industry, directors like Colin Trevorrow, Noé Gaspar, Timo Vuorensola, Benh Zeitlin, Géza M. Tóth, Kevin Macdonald, Szabolcs Hajdu, just to name a few.
The film festival is organized by CINE-MIS Nonprofit Ltd.
