Miskolc Synagogue
An outstanding piece of Hungarian romantic architecture is the Miskolc Synagogue, built between 1861 and 1863 in Neo-Romanesque, Moresque style. It was designed by Ludwig Förster, whose name may be associated with the Dohány Street Synagogue in Pest. It resembles the Leopoldstadt Synagogue in Vienna, which was also designed by Förster.
The façade of Kazinczy Road and the courtyard are decorated with an arabesque rose window and narrow arched windows, and the main facade facing the courtyard shows the double stone table of Moses. Inside the three-nave building of a sham basilica are slender iron pillars with Gothic and Byzantine elements. The intricate painting of the walls, reminiscent of Eastern motifs, is the work of M. Horowitz.
The marble plaques in the gate opening onto Déryné Street commemorate the gracious memory of the Jews who were deported from Miskolc and its surroundings in 1944.
Another synagogue of Miskolc was built in 1901, on Palóczy Street, a domed, two-tower building. It was demolished in 1963.
The Synagogue is currently under renovation and not open to the public during this time.
