Szeleta Cave
Szeleta Cave is one of the most protected caves in Hungary, as well as one of the first cave excavations in the country. It is also named after the Szeleta Prehistoric culture.
Due to its location, it has a special layout. At the top is an observation post with unparalleled views of both the Szinva Valley and Lake Hamor.
At the wide entrance to the cave, there is a memorial plaque of the famous Hungarian scientist Ottó Herman. Ottokár Kadic, following in his footsteps, also began significant excavations here in 1906. During the excavations, they found fine tools, as well as tools of the Ice Age.
A black line on the cave wall indicates where the original level of the cave was prior to the excavation. From the tools found here, the ancestors who lived here long ago are classified as either a Szeleta or Szeletien culture.
The Szeleta Cave is most easily reached from the Szinva nature trail following the red minus sign and red cavern signs. Alternatively, coming from Felso-Hamor off the highway and following the red square and red cave marks will also lead to the cave entrance.
