The numerous villages and towns surrounding Miskolc offer a wealth of experiences. This is one of the most beautiful and varied regions of Hungary with fishing lakes, forest nature trails, ancient castles, country manors, rural cellars, home-cooked flavors and traditions that will make the traveler stay. In addition, the province boasts three World Heritage Sites as designated by UNESCO.
Bükkszentkereszt
The small village hidden in the Bukk Mountains has healing properties which await hikers with its picturesque surroundings and crystal clear air. Its healing sites include the stone of the Blessed Virgin. Its very own, justifiably famous herbalist, Uncle Gyuri Szabó's herb garden and teas attract many visitors. There are still some lime kilns in the area, but the Museum of Glass Making is also worth a visit. If you are looking for adventure, you can climb up to the new lookout tower where you can see the peaks of the Tatras in clear weather. Herbal tours, oven baking, and mushroom days are also organized in the village.
Edelény
The breathtaking sight of the town in the Bodva Valley is the beautifully restored and revived Baroque L'Huillier-Coburg castle complex, which, together with the surrounding park, has been named Edelény Castle Island. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, there are also unique collections in the castle. Furthermore, the city's churches, the remains of the Borsod Castle, and the country manor house are also worth visiting.
Aggtelek
The magical Aggtelek-Domica is the largest stalactite cave system in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can experience amazing natural formations underground, while above ground, you can explore nature trails, mountain paths; traveling on foot, horseback, or by bicycle.
Kassa (Kosice)
In 2013, Miskolc's sister city in Slovakia was the European Capital of Culture. The historic city center, the surrounding mountains offering excursions, and the significant theatrical past share many similarities with the Borsod county seat. Sándor Márai's hometown is rich in Hungarian memories. It is worth visiting the Rodostó House and Rákóczi's resting place in St. Elizabeth's Cathedral.
Tokaj-Hegyalja (Tokaj Hill)
This historic wine region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The picturesque landscape, world-famous Tokaj wines, centuries-old cellars, castles and ancient mansions welcome visitors. Whether participating in special wine tasting events offered by Borbusz (”Wine Bus”) or ordering wine in restaurants, you will appreciate the great tasting Tokaj wine. Hiking and boating enthusiasts will find many opportunities in the Tokaj Hills (Hegyalja). The Vineyard Trail also provides a great program for families.
Harsány
One of the most attractive tourist attractions of the settlement is the Harsány Salt Cellar. The cellar is several hundred meters long. The medicinal salt came directly from the Parajd Salt Mine. An underground playground for children has been established in the salt cellar, which is well suited for the treatment and prevention of respiratory diseases. Above the salt cellar, the medieval wine house serves as a health food store showcasing Transylvanian products at the same time. Harsány is home to the world's largest teddy bear collection called Momma Bear’s Den (Macko Mama Kuckoja) and is recorded as such in the Guinness World Records. The town is also enriched with internationally famous fishing lakes and adventure park.
Mezőkövesd
The capital of ”Matyóföld” was known for its rich folk art treasures and busy cultural life. Matyo embroidery is also on the UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage. Exquisite Matyó motifs are reborn under the control of today's artisans on objects with new functions. The open-air Hadas District, the heritage houses and the special museum collections showcase the traditions of the past. The thermal water of the Zsóry Bath is of legendary status. The swimming pool and thermal adventure bath are open all year round, and the open air facility welcomes visitors from spring to autumn.
